An excellent video tutorial contains useful tips on writing technique. Editing is a doddle: to change a note’s pitch, simply drag it up or down on the stave, or press the pen’s erase button and tap on a note to delete it. StaffPad creates a pickup bar here and shortens the width of the bar appropriately. The pickup bar doesn’t have a bar number (well, technically it’s bar 0), so that the first full bar of your score will be bar 1.
