Good luck. MacUpdate is showing 1.7.6 as the latest version but the Arduino/Genuino website (https://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/Software) still shows 1.6.5 as being the latest. It looks like MacUpdate has gotten the version number from Arduino srl (the company that used to make the boards for Arduino.cc). So go by „Apple Logo top left“ > „About This Mac“ > „System Report“ > „Hardware / USB„.
